Ainu, known as the ethnic group in Golden Kamuy, are indigenous people in Hokkaido, Japan. Regardless of DNA and genetic origins, humans tend to share commonalities in belief, mythology, religion, etc., if you look far back enough into history. Ainu and the indigenous people of Canada share the spiritual belief that all things have souls – animals, rocks, trees, mountains. And, they share the practice of harvesting from nature (tree bark, fish skin, animal fur, etc.), and thanking nature for the gift. More will be explored in future videos.
Today, I take you to the Bill Reid Gallery in downtown Vancouver to explore Haida art, dance and song, and Musqueam cedar weaving. Bill Reid brought Haida and Northwest Coast Indigenous art to the world stage, and since then, parallels have been drawn between First Nations people and the art, clothing, culture and music of the Ainu.
